One of the area's most popular entertainment districts is cracking down on security threats.

In an effort to maintain its status as a nightlight hotspot, Westport is initiating enhanced security measures that will be in effect from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.

A pedestrian area will be marked off with only four entry points.

Bags and purses cannot exceed the dimensions of notebook paper and they may not be thicker than six inches.

Weapons and large metal objects are also banned.

Valid IDs will be required of everyone over 21.

Police officers and civil rights monitors will observe how the new policies are implemented.

Westport stakeholders and businesses have been discussing security issues over the last two years as the number of shootings and fights have increased.

"The overwhelming feedback to the plan was supportive to minimize threats using weapons given state gun laws run counter to public safety in this open nightlife area that attracts crowds," according to a news release sent out by Westport Regional Business League.
