Police continue their investigation into the Wednesday morning murder of a Kansas City attorney.

Tom Pickert, 39, was gunned down in his front yard along 66th Terrace, east of Wornall Road. His wife heard the gunshot and found him dead.

"My heart goes out to them and their family," said one Brookside resident.

Police found a white van that they suspected was connected to the shooting. That van was reportedly registered to David Jungerman, who was being forced to pay $5.7 million because he lost a court case to a client of Pickert's over the summer. Pickert represented a homeless man who sued Jungerman for shooting him and causing him to lose part of his leg.

Police said no one was inside the van when it was found.

Tom Pickert was active with the local bar and the Kansas trial lawyers association.

"I always remember him being very smart, very engaging, super intelligent and always with a great sense of humor," said David Morantz, who went to law school with Pickert.

Pickert's widow works as a doctor for the University of Kansas Health System.
