Kansas City, MO - Former Jackson County executive Mike Sanders and his chief of staff plead guilty in federal court Friday to one count each of committing wire fraud.

Sanders took money from campaign accounts he controlled after paying a long time friend for consulting work that wasn't done, with most of the money kicked back to Sanders.

The FBI had been investigating Sanders since 2013, extending the investigation to chief of staff Calvin Williford.

Prior to serving as county executive, Sanders was the Jackson County prosecutor, with a reputation of being tough on crime, as well as heading up the Missouri Democratic Party.  He left the county executive's office in 2015 to go into private practice and spend more time with his family.

Neither Sanders or Williford would comment.
