Three people were killed Wednesday night when a tornado blew through Golden City, a small town just northeast of Joplin, where 161 people were killed on the same date, eight years before.

More people were injured in Carl Junction, another small town in southwest Missouri, according to the state's Emergency Management Agency.

At a 6 a.m. news conference, Gov. Mike Parson said storms that slammed Missouri overnight left devastation across much of the state and it was fortunate that only three fatalities have been reported. Jefferson City took a direct hit from a tornado. At least 20 people were injured.
