JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A tornado left a path of destruction in Missouri's capital city late Wednesday night shortly before midnight.

A powerful storm system swept through the Show-Me state late Wednesday, moving from southwest to northeast.

Jefferson City Police Lt. David Williams says no deaths were reported in the capital, but 20 people have been rescued by emergency personnel.

The tornado impacted a roughly three-mile stretch on the south side of Jeff City.

The governor is praising first responders who worked to free people from homes that were damaged.

Earlier Wednesday, more than 150 miles southwest of Jefferson City, the storm system spawned a tornado that killed three people in Golden City, Missouri.
