A high school athletic director in east Texas knows that stardom was not an overnight phenomenon for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Adam Cook coached football at Whitehouse High School when Mahomes was there. The town has a population of about 7,660. Cook says not much has changed about the star signal caller since he was a teenager.

"He's just a humble individual, a great teammate, the type of athlete and leader that actually makes everybody around him better," Cook told KMBZ.

Cook recognized Mahomes' talent well before high school. He knew there was something special about Mahomes at a football camp when the boy was in the fifth or sixth grade.

"It was easy to see whenever he threw the ball that he definitely had a lot more talent than the average kid," Cook said. "It was easy to tell.

Whitehouse, which is not far from Tyler, is strong Dallas Cowboys country, but Patrick Mahomes has changed some loyalties.

"Sporting good stores selling Patrick Mahomes jerseys and shirts in their stores -- definitely people around here are very proud of what he's done," Cook said.
