The Kansas City streetcar system is picking up speed by making some adjustments to downtown traffic signals and scheduling.

The changes are expected to result in more frequent arrivals, more streetcars on the line and less layover time at Union Station.

"We're moving from a 30-minute round trip to a 24-minute round trip, and then maybe a six-minute layover at Union Station," said Donna Mandelbaum, Streetcar Authority spokesperson.

The streetcar authority is making contingency plans should an extension to UMKC be finalized. Two new vehicles will be placed in service sometime in 2019.
