Sprint is trying to fill in the homework gap for kids who do not have internet at home and are forced to find other ways to complete online assignments.

Sprint is handing out devices and free wireless services to a million students nationwide, said Doug Michelman, president of the 1Million Project.

Students in the Kansas City Public School district are part of the pilot project.

"We've got 500 students right here in Kansas City who are benefitting from the program now who are given a device and the service," Michelman said. "We're here at Lincoln Prep getting 20 more students onto the program."

The nationwide rollout is this fall.
