Food assistance programs have not been directly affected by the government shutdown, but some people who rely on Uncle Sam to fill their cupboards are feeling the pinch anyway.

Each grocer that takes part in the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) accepts the electronic payments that replaced food stamps. Participation requires both the people getting the assistance and sellers to periodically renew registrations.

The Kansas food Dealers Association says a number of stores failed to submit their renewals before the partial government shutdown. As a result, they are temporarily not able to accept SNAP payments from families looking to buy food.

While it is still unknown how long the shutdown might last, it is also unclear how long it will take process back renewals.
