Influenza activity is considered moderate as the U.S. enters the peak of flu season.

Flu cases typically ramp up in the coldest months of the year, but things are especially quiet right now, said Tammy Landrum, with the Jackson County Health Department.

"We have 268 confirmed cases of flu in Jackson County right now, which last year, we were much higher," Landrum said.

Other health departments in the area have similar stories.

H1N1, or Swine Flu has returned to the headlines after 26-year-old Fox News commentator Bre Payton died suddenly. She was diagnosed with H1N1 and meningitis before her death. There were no recent cases of H1N1 in Jackson County, Landrum said.

"Our current vaccine has H1N1 strain in it, so you get protection against that," Landrum said.
