The shooting happened late Saturday near 83rd and Tracy. The boy and the woman where at home when someone sprayed the house with bullets. The boy, whose name was not immediately released, was getting ready to start school this week, and had plans to buy a new backpack on Sunday with his mother.

As many as two dozen shots were fired toward the home, police said.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker sent out a message on Twitter saying that the boy loved math and playing with Legos.
