The Shawnee Mission Medical Center has joined the MD Anderson Cancer Network.

Shawnee Mission Health CEO Ken Bacon says it's a "groundbreaking partnership" that will give cancer patients in the KC Metro another option for treatment.

Dr. Bill Murphy (pictured speaking), MD Anderson physician's network chair, said the partnership will save patients and their families from making a trip to Houston if they're using the MD Anderson system.

MD Anderson is considered the leading cancer treatment system in the nation.

Bacon said putting the partnership together took about 18 months.
