Police officer killed in Clinton, Missouri, person of interest named

A police officer in Clinton, Missouri was shot and killed during a traffic stop late Sunday night. 

Officials in Henry County say a manhunt continued Monday morning for the suspect who opened fire. 

The officer who died has been identified as Gary Michael, 37. He stopped a vehicle around 10:15 p.m. Sunday. 

The driver of a Dodge Nitro stepped out of the car and began shooting during the stop, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Officer Michael returned fire, but it was unknown whether the suspect was injured.

The suspect drove away and crashed the Dodge a couple of blocks away. SWAT officers closed off an around around the crash site.

Michael had been with Clinton Police for about a year. There is no dash cam video of the incident, Missouri State Troopers said. 

Officials are looking for Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton. Anyone with information about McCarthy is asked to call 911 immediately.
