Like most law enforcement agencies across the country, the Overland Park Police Department is working hard to find new recruits.

The city is offering $3,500 in signing bonuses for new officers. There are 13 open positions now.

"It's very competitive out here with other agencies," said Officer John Lacy, OPPD spokesman. "We want to bring the best and the brightest to Overland Park, so we're offering these bonuses to lure more applicants."

Recruits with no experience will get $750 after they complete police academy training, plus another $750 after they finish field training.

Officers with experience will receive $1500 at the end of their field training, then  another $1,000 after their first and second years in the field.
