One New Year's resolution that could help all other improvements more likely is to get organized in 2019.

A cluttered home causes stress and frustration, especially when you can't find what you're looking for, said Helen Austen, owner of Organized by Helen and Co.

There are a few rules to be aware of when getting things in order; the first is that everything should have its own place, or "home."

"Don't just place things indiscriminantly," Austen said. "That also means a lot of these 'homes' are contained within a bin, or a container or a tray."

The second rule is labeling everything in broad and simple categories, but the key to getting organized is found in maintenance.

"Anything we do on a daily, regular basis is a lot easier to do than something we do every once in a while," Austen said.

Austen recommends what she calls the Two-Ten Rule. If a task takes less than two minutes, do it right away, and do a 10-minute tidy-up at the end of every day. The idea is to create habits that keep one from doing everything at once.
