Porch pirates are not the only unwanted prowlers looking for easy pickings at properties in Old Town Olathe.

A lot of residents of the neighborhood have seen a coyote walking around. The animals are common in Kansas, but this one has been hanging around, and it does not seem to be afraid to approach front doors in a search for food.

Coyotes are not considered a threat to humans, but it is a good idea to keep an idea on some family members, said Andrea Joslin, outdoor education specialist at the Ernie Miller Nature Center.

"They could attack a small dog or a cat, so if you know you have a coyote in your area, you would want to make sure that you are outside with that dog or cat when they're out there," Joslin said.

A few loud noises will usually scare coyotes away.

"In the winter they have less food available, so they're looking for more food," Joslin said. "There could be some that is available in (Old Town Olathe)."

Other ways to discourage coyote invasions include bringing in dog food, securing trash can lids and making sure there is no trash laying around.
