A New York City police bomb squad has recovered a suspicious package addressed to Robert DeNiro and investigators say it may contain a device similar to others sent to Democratic figures.

Security personnel at Tribeca Productions summoned police at around 5 a.m. on Thursday. The bomb squad removed the package and took it to a police facility in the Bronx at around 6:30 a.m.

Wednesday's discoveries of multiple pipe bombs comes two weeks before midterm elections.

A local expert is weighing in on the bombs that were sent to CNN's headquarters and several Democratic leaders and liberals.

"This isn't that surprising, given the rhetoric used by the administration, given the rhetoric used by both sides of the aisle, in terms of the way their opponents are being painted as enemies," said Don Haider-Markel, political science chair and professor at the University of Kansas.

Political passion and angry speech have intensified since the 1980s, Haider-Markel said.

"There are essentially matches out there, waiting to be lit," Haider-Markel said. "The risks to people are no greater today than they were yesterday."

Update 9:30 a.m.: WASHINGTON (AP) - A law enforcement official says a package addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden appears similar to packages containing bombs sent to prominent Democrats and has been intercepted at a Delaware mail facility. The official wasn't authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on the condition of anonymity. Several packages containing pipe bombs have been sent to prominent Democrats but have been intercepted.
