A 2002 report from the National Transportation Safety Board shed light on the safety concerns of duck boats outfitted with canopies.

Focus has been renewed on the report following the death of 17 people in a duck boat sinking on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri.

The duck boat that capsized in heavy waves and wind Thursday evening on Table Rock Lake also had a canopy.

The sinking of the Miss Majestic on Lake Hamilton near Hot Springs, Arkansas on May 1, 1999, had a canopy that prevented people from escaping when the boat started taking on water. Thirteen people died in that sinking.
