Kansas City, MO -  Students in the North Kansas City School District are riding in some of the safest buses in the state, according to inspection results form the Missouri Highway PAtrol.

All 159 buses in the districts' fleet passed the rigorous 100-point inspection.

This is first time the district has received a 100% inspection rate. The NKCS Transportation Department also received the ‘Total Fleet Excellence Award' for the 21st straight year. The Missouri Highway Patrol gives the award to districts with outstanding bus maintenance and safety.

Transportation Director Lonnie Waterman commended everyone for playing an important role in making this happen, "It's good for kids all the way around because, at the end of the day, knowing that what we put out on the road is safe, but then having the stamp of approval from the state highway patrol, if you will, legitimizes the things that we are doing every day."

It is rare for an entire fleet as large as the NKC School district to pass the inspection 100%. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, in school districts with more than 100 buses, none passed 100% in 2016.

Each year NKC Schools’ 159 buses transport approximately 15,5000 students and travel 2.4 million miles.
