Kansas City, MO - Hospitals are reporting an increase in the number of patients who have been injured from slipping and falling on ice.

Doctors are treating people from bruises and broken bones.

But the greatest danger is head injuries say doctors.

"Typically striking your head on the concrete, and that's what causes your brain to jar back and forth inside your skull and cause bleeding," said Dr. Marc Larsen, with St. Luke's Hospital. "You can have concussions just from slipping and falling, and that shock of your brain moving back and forth can cause some kind of bruising or injury to the brain."

Larsen oversees St. Luke's five community hospitals. The organization treated about 60 people with falling injuries over a 24 hour period.

Walking on the ice is especially dangerous for the elderly, Larsen said.
