Kansas City, MO - City council heard today from the Aviation Department and contractor Edgemoor that the construction of a new terminal at KCI will be delayed at least a year.

The new terminal was tentatively set to open in November 2021. Now, that is being pushed back to possibly October 2022.

The projected costs have also risen from just under a billion dollars to complete the project to $1.3 - $1.4 billion.

Citing larger planes and more routes, airlines had asked for an increase from 35 to 39 gates at the new terminal.

That then increases the terminal's square footage.

That has prompted a redesign which Edgemoor managing director Geoffrey Stricker says will take through the summer.

Also contributing to the delays, the FAA has yet to approve an environmental assessment before work can begin.   And Edgemoor says it hasn't finalized deals with labor unions.
