People spend an average of $45 on Halloween costumes at retail stores but most would rather put one together themselves, using things they find in their closets or at thrift stores.

Goodwill's annual Halloween survey shows about 68 percent of people are going the do-it-yourself route when assembling their costumes.

Most people want to be creative and make their own costumes, said Evette Rios, lifestyle expert.

"The vast majority of the population is feeling like they want to do something fun and different; they want to stand out from their friends and family," Rios said. "They really like funny costumes over scarier ones."

Like in years past, pop culture costumes are the most popular.  This year, expect to see creepy "It" clowns and plenty of Wonder Women.
