Any optimistic belief that the levee would hold is gone as the Missouri town of Craig is inundated by flood water.

Most of the town about an hour and 50 minutes northwest of Kansas City was under water as of Wednesday evening.

Lifelong resident Laura Mutchler sought help at the First Christian Church in Mound City, which is serving as a Red Cross shelter. Her son and grandson stayed behind to protect the property from potential looters. Mutchler's home was spared in the floods of 1993 and 2011, but this time she was told her house would be under water.

"We had to pack up and move out," Mutchler said. "It was a manditory leave. I'm very greatful that they opened the church because I didn't know where I was going."

About 25 families were preparing to evacuate their homes near Bean Lake, which is close to the Missouri River, between the towns of Atchison and St. Joseph.

I have packed so many times, and then the water didn't get my house," said Deb Hooper, who has spent close to a week taking things up to the attic. "I'm just pulling everything out and making piles."

Hooper said she was told the flood water could reach the ceiling in her house.
