Kansas City, MO - Nine-year-old Kooper Lackman is asking drivers to slow down and pay close attention when orange cones are on the roads.

Kooper's dad Jason works for the Missouri Department of Transportation and has been struck while out on the road.

"Luckily, it was just a mirror each time," Jason said. "One was about 70 miles an hour and the other was in town, Columbia, probably 45 (mph)."

"It's kind of scary because people get hit every moment," Kooper said.

Kooper's dad, Jason, has been hit while working on the highway, twice.

Nineteen MoDOT employees have been killed on the job since 2000. Thirteen of the deaths involved work zone accidents.

Kooper and Jason say the best thing drivers can do is slow down and remain vigilant when people are working on the roads.
