Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley is taking a first step toward entering the race for U.S. Senate.

A Hawley spokesman confirms the Republican will launch an exploratory committee this week. The move will allow Hawley to begin raising funds for a campaign.

Donors and powerful Republicans see Hawley as the man who can beat two-term Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill in 2018.

McCaskill could be vulnerable. She is among 10 Senate Democrats running in states that were won by Donald Trump in the November, 2016 presidential election.

Hawley is a graduate of Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Stanford University and Yale Law School.

Analysts believe Hawley is the type of candidate who can unify the conservative and establishment wings of the GOP.
