Mission, KS - Johnson County residents have seen little to no activity at a major construction site for months, but some may be happy to learn that work could resume soon for the Mission Gateway project.

The development sits off Roe Avenue, between Shawnee Mission Parkway and Johnson Drive, and it comprises some of the most valuable real estate in the Kansas City area. But for the past few months, on-site activity at the long-promised $200 million-plus shopping, entertainment, residential and hotel development has ground to a halt.

The frustration from area residents is not lost on Andy Ashwal, Vice President of GFI Financial, Mission Gateway's main developer.

"The community, those who have been watching this for years, are right to have doubts," Ashwal said. "I think those doubts have basis."

Ashwal says ground work stopped because design teams had not completed plans for the complex, despite first moving dirt at the site a year ago. That work has been completed, he says, and work on the project's first anchor tenant is underway now.

"They're going to be seeing the beginning work of Cinergy, which is the destination entertainment tenant," Ashwal said.

In addition to Cinergy, Mission Gateway's developer plans to build a 200-room hotel, apartment complex and small shop-focused retail. The project is to be completed in phases, with Cinergy scheduled to finally open in the summer of 2020.
