Kansas City, MO - A new citywide mask mandate went into effect Monday in Kansas City, Missouri.  A similar rule began Tuesday for KCK/Wyandotte County.  Jackson County is expected to set out a similar rule later in the week.

KCMO Mayor Quinton Lucas announced the mandate last week in response to a new surge of coronavirus cases in Missouri and in Kansas City.

All employees or visitors to any place of public accommodation must wear face masks or coverings in an area or while performing an activity which will necessarily involve close contact or proximity to co-workers or the public where 6 feet of separation is not feasible. The order is effective through July 12.

The key to the mandate is the distancing - If you’re somewhere where you can’t maintain 6 feet of distance between you and someone else, then you need to wear a mask.

There are some exceptions to the mandate:

  • Minors, with strong guidance from the CDC and the Kansas City Health Department that children over age 2 wear face coverings.
  • People who have disabilities that:
    • Prevent them from comfortably wearing or taking off face coverings.
    • Prevent them from communicating while wearing face coverings.
  • People who have respiratory conditions or breathing trouble.
  • People who have been told by a medical, legal, or behavioral health professional not to wear face coverings.
  • People who are seated in a restaurant or tavern and are actively engaged in consuming food or drink while adequately distanced from other patrons.
  • If you’re eating or drinking at a restaurant or tavern, you do not need to wear a mask, but once you’re finished you need to put on your mask.

Also, effective Monday, the city announced percentage capacity limits as required by Lucas’s Eighth Amended Order will be eliminated, except for taverns and bars.
