The man who reported someone had painted vile, racist graffiti on his car in Manhattan, touching off criticism of the city and Kansas State University, vandalized the car himself, Riley County Police said.

Dauntarius Williams, 21, reported Nov. 1 that someone had vandalized his vehicle, which was parked outside an apartment complex near the university campus.

Williams later admitted to RCPD detectives that he had made up the story, officials said.

Riley County officials said they did not plan to file charges against Williams for filing a false report. They said it would not be in the best interest of the community.

An RCPD official said Williams was genuinely remorseful for creating the negative media attention.

“I would like to deeply apologize to the community. The whole situation got out of hand when it shouldn’t have even started. It was just a Halloween prank that got out of hand. I wish I could go back to that night but I can’t. I just want to apologize from the bottom of my heart for the pain and news I have brought you all,” Williams said in a statement.
