The Missouri Department of Transportation is advising drivers to avoid Interstate 470 and 291 Highway because of another step in its ongoing project to repair and reconstruct bridges in the area.

MoDOT has begun restricting 291 between 39th Street and the Little Blue River. This phase of the project is expected to continue for 45 days.

"We have only two lanes of interstate and quite a significant amount of traffic, and when you take away one of those lanes, it backs up traffic quite a bit," said Jacob Wilson, MoDOT resident engineer.

MoDOT estimates delays could be between 50 and 75 minutes in the area, and that is if there are not traffic accidents, which would only make things worse.

"(There are) lots of stores and shops and restaurants all around that area, so we want people to know, and be ready and be prepared for this work," Wilson said.
