A recently-published survey lists three cities in our region among the best cities in the U.S. in which to live.

According to 24/7WallStreet.com Lawrence is ranked 33rd, Olathe is 23rd and Lee's Summit is 19th in the 50 Best Cities list.

The survey is published in USA Today.

"We've been on lists from USA Today to Money Magazine, so it's nice to see another repeat, to be in that category of one of the greatest cities to live in in America," said Tim Arbeiter, president, Lee's Summit Chamber of Commerce.

Factors in the Top 50 Most Livable Cities are things like jobless rates, affordable housing and violent crime rates. It comes down to involved citizens, said Sgt. Chris DePue, Lee's Summit Police.

"I think what we do as a police department that is kind of radically different is we really stress community engagement," DePue said. "We realize we can't do what we do without help from them."

Only 109 violent crimes were reported in Lee's Summit in 2016. The city's crime rate is a fraction of the state's.

Only 3.5% of the Lee's Summit labor force is unemployed, which places the city well below state and national averages.

Researchers at the website mostly used census data in compiling scores for liveable cities.
