Edgemoore Infrastructure & Real Estate, the contractor for the new terminal at Kansas City International Airport, is handing out hard hats and chrome shovels for a groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. Monday.

The theme of the ritual is "Wheels Up, Kansas City!" Edgemoor will have executives on site, along with Kansas City leaders, and other partners from the labor, business and community sectors. It will take place at the airport's Terminal A parking structure.

The $1.64 billion project began with a massive public relations campaign. There was a successful public vote, then years of political wrangling.

When it is finished, the terminal will have 39 terminals and measure about one million square feet. Edgemoor expects the enormous project to create about 5,000 construction-related jobs.

Edgemoor hopes to hold a grand opening ceremony in early 2023.
