RJ Children's Haven

A safe daycare environment for kids with compromised immune systems is getting closer to becoming a reality.

RJ Children's Haven will be the first of it's kind in the country, providing an environment for children who are normally isolated for months or even years from socialization.

The facility has been in the works for about nine years, but now, the building at 2924 Cherry has been purchased. Renovations start in the spring, thanks to donors, said Karen Anthony, president.

These are community people who have said that they are willing to help, and believe in these children, and know that this is part of the health care that would help them recover," Anthony said.

More than $800,000 has been raised for the renovation process.

"They have bellied up to the bar and seen the need, and they're all they can to help these children have a place to come and heal," Anthony said.

The daycare on Hospital Hill will have a hospital operating room-grade ventilation system to aid in removing dangerous airborne spores and contaminants. Shoes are not allowed inside, and there are many more precautions against dangerous germs and elements.

Donations are still needed for operating costs. The organization takes donations at its website, Anthony said.
