Demolition of an old hotel

Kansas City, MO - The Royale Inn is nearly no more. Demolition began on the old hotel at the corner of The Paseo and Independence Avenue Monday morning.

The demo is part of the $12 million Paseo Gateway project the city has launched to revitalize and beautify this section of the Historic Northeast.

The Royale opened in 1965, and over the decades fell into decline as did much of the surrounding area. The hotel was "an eyesore, a source of vandalism and illegal activities," said Mayor Sly James. "It's nice to finally get rid of it, this has been a long process to get taken down."

The city paid 2.7 million to acquire the property. The Capri motel, across the road from the Royale, was demolished in 2015 as part of the project.
