JOCO school district to ticket those not social distancing at facilities with trespassing

Kansas City, MO - The Shawnee Mission School District will issuing trespassing citations beginning today to people not following social distancing guidelines at its athletic facilities. 

The district said its had complaints about large groups playing sports on district fields.

Groups of more than 10 people, people closer than six feet together, and sports where multiple individuals touch a common object, such as a ball or bat, all present opportunities for transmission for the coronavirus, the Johnson County, KS school district said in a news release.

For now, stadiums and athletic facilities in SMSD will continue to remain open, as long as people follow guidelines:

  • Personal distancing guidelines must be strictly adhered to (six feet of distance from any individual not in the same household)
  • No groups of more than 10 people
  • No team sports, including but not limited to:
  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Soccer
  • Frisbee

The district will continue to monitor facilities to ensure compliance, and may revise these guidelines if necessary, in order to protect public health.
