Kansas CIty, MO - A court ruling issued Tuesday has invalidated the scheduled democratic primary election for Jackson County Sheriff.

The Jackson County Democratic Committee filed a suit against the Jackson County Legislature saying it did not have the legal authority to call a primary election for that office, and that it did not have the authority to reopen the filing period for candidates after former sheriff Mike Sharp resigned in April.

The democratic committee is now set to nominate a candidate on August 21. The new sheriff will be selected during the November 2018 general election.

The ruling states that the primary race and the candidates will still appear on next week's ballot, however, any votes placed for that race will not be counted.
