Independence officer's actions reviewed following Applebee's incident

Viral video showed accusation of dine-n-dash

Both the city and the police department of Independence, Missouri are responding to the encounter at the Applebee's at Independence Center where two women were accused of having "dined-and-dashed" from the restaurant the day before.

During the encounter, an Independence police officer was called in on a report of theft. As seen in the video, the women are eventually told to pay their bill and leave.

Independence Police Chief  Brad Halsey said today in a news release they've reviewed the officer's actions to make sure they comply with department policy, but would not comment further as it's a personnel matter.

The city isn't commenting on the results of that review either.  In a news release, the city says they do provide implicit bias training and they're looking at that to see if any changes are needed.

“We sincerely regret the negative experience the young women involved had in our City,” City Manager Zach Walker said.

Just days after the incident, Applebee's took to social media announcing it had fired three employees, including a manager, and would close the store to "regroup, reflect, learn and grow".
