Kansas City, MO - More than 800 families were provided with meals and daily essentials during a drive-up food distribution event at the Central Academy of Excellence school on Kansas City's east side.

Each family were given a 25 pound bundle of donated food and supplies.

The event was put-on by the international aid group "Feed the Children", and were joined by area churches, the Kansas City Public School District and local social service organization Operation Breakthrough.

Mary Esselman, CEO of Operation Breakthrough, says hunger is a real issue for many in the city, especially during the summer months when chilren are out of school. She says discussions are underway on how to expand the food distribution program.
