Belfonte Ice Cream & Dairy Foods Company

In a new series Hometown Homemade, KMBZ is showcasing products that are made in Missouri and Kansas.

Thursday's feature is Belfonte Dairy in Kansas City.

Belfonte was founded in 1969 by David Belfonte's father, Sal. The children answered telephones and loaded trucks. Mrs. Belfonte took care of bookkeeping.

"In 1985, he decided to get into the ice cream manufacturing business," Belfonte said. "Approximately 1990, 1992, we started manufacturing yogurt, sour cream and cottage cheese."

David says ice cream really put the Belfonte Dairy on the map.

"You started seeing some of the national brands come into the market and they were offering the more exotic flavors," Belfonte said. "(Sal) decided we needed to get into this business, so that way, we could offer comparible products to the national brands."

Vanilla is still the top-seller among all of Belfonte's flavors.

"Right after that would be your Moose Tracks, and then you get into all your chocolate flavors," Belfonte said.

Moose Tracks ice cream contains peanut butter cups and fudge.

Belfonte sells more than 190 products in more than 550 stores and in more than 600 restaurants and other establishments. Belfonte Ice Cream is distributed from Belfonte's plant in Kansas City to Wichita and Tulsa.
