A Kansas City man is charged in his wife's murder after his seven-year-old daughter told a school counselor there was a body in the basement.

Police forced their way into the home in the 2400 block of College and found Benjamin Byers, 45, who said he hadn't seen his wife since Monday. Officers obtained a search warrant after seeing blood spatters.

Byers' daughter at Phyllis Wheatley Elementary said her father was acting strangely and he had been drinking. Police believe Melissa Byers, 47, died from multiple stab wounds. Her body was wrapped in carpet and plastic. Police found blood in multiple areas of the house.

Benjamin Byers is charged with murder in the second degree, armed criminal action, abandonment of a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child.
