Gardner-native Bubba Starling gets his shot at the Majors

The Kansas City Royals have called up their No. 1 Draft pick from 2011, Bubba Starling, who graduated from Gardner-Edgerton High School in Johnson County.

The outfielder passed up a football scholarship at Nebraska,where he was recruited as a quarterback. The 6-foot-4 multi-sport star was the No. 5 pick overall in the 2011 Major League Draft.

Starling has fought through injuries in his minor league career. he only played 20 games in 2018 because of an oblique injury. He turns 27 on Aug. 3.

Starling is having his best season in the minors. He is hitting .310 with seven home runs and 38 RBIs at Triple-A Omaha. He has also stolen nine bases.
