Turmoil continues in Garden City, where the Chief of Police has been suspended without pay just days after his entire force was laid off.

Chief Thomas Alber said he went into work Monday to pick up some equipment, and he was met by Mayor Daniel Cantrell and a Cass County Sheriff's deputy. He was handed the following letter:

"Dear Thomas, The Garden City Board of Aldermen held an emergency closed session meeting on Nov. 15, 2018. Your employment with the city is hereby suspended without pay."

Alber said he questions whether the move is legal. He is considering his options.

Before last week, the Garden City Police Department had seven officers and five volunteers. The city of about 1,600 residents plans to rely on the Cass County Sheriff to provide police service.
