Funeral service held for slain police officer Ryan Morton in Clinton, Missouri

Clinton, MO - Police officer Christopher Ryan Morton was honored at a funeral service in this mid-Missouri town, six days after being shot to death in the line of duty last week, after he and two other officers were sent to the wrong were sent to the wrong address. The other two officers were wounded in the gunfire.

Among family and friends in attendence at the funeral service, representatives from multiple law enforcement agencies, as well as Missouri Governor Eric Greitens.

Morton is being buried in Knob Noster, Missouri where he grew up.

 

At a candlelight vigil Sunday night, Morton’s family thanked the community for the outpouring of support shown after his death.

"Now I know why my son loved this town so much," said Darrel Morton, Officer Morton's father. "It's a great town. And he loved being a police officer. And I want to thank the Clinton PD."

Officer Morton re-joined the Clinton Police Department as a full-time officer following the death of Officer Gary Michael just seven months ago. Officer Morton and Officer Michael had been friends.

Before returning to Clinton, Morton served as a police officer at Kansas City’s VA Hospital.

“He was straightforward,” said Deputy Chief Gene Parker. “He was honest, and he just had that character about him where you could immediately have that rapport. And that’s what worked really well here.”

In 2005, Morton joined the Army National Guard Unit 1141st Engineer Company; he was a 12 Bravo-Combat Engineer. With the National Guard, he completed a tour to Kosovo, and was also activated to support relief efforts in Joplin, Mo. after the devastating tornado in 2011.

Morton then served in Afghanistan in 2014.

After returning home, Morton worked for the Clinton Police Department as a reserve officer, and then at the Kansas City VA.

Days after his death, Morton was scheduled to be initiated as a member of the Clinton Elks Lodge.
