Federal Express announced an ambitious plan to hire thousands of part time employees ahead of the holiday shopping season.

About 1,500 positions need to be filled, mostly at FedEx ground facilities in the Kansas City metro, said Nikki Mendecino, company spokeswoman. The shipping giant is responding to continued growth in e-commerce.

"We're seeing a lot more people order things online, things that you probably didn't think you could even order online," Mendecino said. "Adding these team members really helps with the demand for our services and the volume that we see come through our network.

Nationwide FexEx plans to hire up to 50,000 part-time employees. The company has large hubs in Kansas City, Missouri and Lenexa, plus two smaller stations in Olathe.

Career tracks with FedEx commonly begin with part-time employment that leads to full-time positions.

"Last year more than one third of the package handlers that we hired at our FedEx ground facilities retained employment with the company after the holiday season," Mendicino said.

The company recommends that people visit their website to apply for work.
