A 36-year-old man testified at his preliminary hearing in Johnson County that he cut up his wife's body to protect his family.

Justin Rey admitted that he dismembered his wife's body while their children were present at a Kansas City hotel in October 2017. Police officers later found Rey, his two young daughters and containers of Jessica Rey's remains, at a Lenexa storage unit. One girl was a newborn and the other was two.

Rey testified he was taking the remains back to Arizona for burial. He has said his wife died in childbirth but has also told investigators she committed suicide.

Rey is charged in Johnson County with two counts of aggravated child endangerment and two counts of contributing to a child’s misconduct. Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf. A judge ruled there is enough evidence to order a trial.

Rey is also charged in Jackson County, Missouri with abandonment of a corpse.
