Tuesday marks the beginning of the holiday travel season that is expected to be very busy for millions of Americans.

About four million people are planning to fly to their destinations between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, a five percent increase over 2016, and the largest yearly jump in history.

Travelers should expect long lines and weather delays, said Mark Howell with the Transportation Safety Administration.

"It's best, when you're traveling over the fall and winter breaks, to really keep an eye on what's going on with the weather, not only in your location, but kind of everywhere else," Howell said. "Keep in tune with your airline to make sure your flight's going to be on time."

Enhanced screening procedures are in place for electronics larger than cell phones, Howell said. Those items need to be placed in separate bins when people go through standard security screening.
