The economy has been in an upswing over the past few years but an exert says you should not count on steady growth in 2019.

The coming year will be a tale of two economies, said Chris Kuehl, managing partner with Armada Corporate Intelligence, with the first half much like 2018 and the second turning into a rough ride.

"Probably the biggest challenge, and this has been developing for years, is retail in general," Kuehl said. "The big box stores and the traditional retailers have just not competed very well against the online onslaught."

American electronics manufacturers will feel a hit, because components used to build mobile phones and televisions are mainly produced in China. Shortages of some products are expected, at least until retailers find other sources.

"I think, for the most part, people just need to figure out what they think they need, or need to buy for the year, and get control of that early," Kuehl said.

Among the biggest concerns in 2019, Kuehl said, will be oil prices and wage hikes, the effects of which will be felt throughout the economy.
