The Shawnee Mission off-leash dog park is closed for five weeks for renovations.

The main purpose for the upgrades is to improve access, so the facility will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"The main thing is more accessability, the new benches will be nice, and the fenced-in area," said Richard Smalley with the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department. "The off-leash area won't be changing that much."

There are several other off-leash parks in the area, including Heritage Park in Olathe, Stoll Park in Overland Park, and Kill Creek Streamway Park in De Soto.

Entering the off-leash area during the construction closure will be considered trespassing and could be hazardous to both humans and their pets, Smalley said.
