Kansas City, MO & KS - Construction begins this weekend on the Lewis & Clark Viaduct, the portion of I-70 that connects downtown Kansas City, Missouri to downtown Kansas City, Kansas.

The stretch of interstate will be closed for up to two years.

The Lewis and Clark Viaduct is in danger of becoming structurally deficient, said Nicole Randall, spokeswoman with the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Engineers did not want to place load limits or partial closures on the bridge during its replacement. The cost of maintenance would be greater than replacing the viaduct, Randall said.

Lane closures begin Friday night.

Westbound I-70 will be closed from Admiral Blvd. to 3rd Street in Kansas City, Kansas while workers install the traffic controls.

The permanent closures between Broadway and 3rd Street begin Sunday at 5 a.m.
