A Kansas City man is being hailed as a hero for saving his neighbor from an apartment fire.

The fire broke out Saturday in a two-story building near 36th and Walnut.

"I could hear her in there screaming for help," said James Siebert, the good samaritan. "So I made a couple of attempts to go in -- it was really thick -- really hard to breathe."

Siebert quickly found a way to get to the panicked woman.

"I just kind of took basic knowledge, back from school, got real low to the ground, threw something over my head, I crawled in there," Siebert said. "I was able to find her and threw her over my shoulders and pulled her out."

Siebert and the woman both suffered minor smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
