City Union Mission is helping out the neediest kids by providing school uniforms before classes start in August.

The Mission is offering uniforms for public school students in kindergarten through sixth grade in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas.

Parents must pre-qualify. They will be able to pick up uniforms the week of July 31.

The charity expects to give away about 400 uniforms, said Laurie Grant, spokesperson with City Union Mission.

"It builds their self-esteem," Grant said. "It encourages them to do well and the parents are just very grateful."

The Mission is asking for donations to offset the costs. The uniforms are about $35 each.
